OSTEOPATHY Osteopathy is a well established system of diagnosis and treatment that deals with the relationship of structure and function of the whole body. The practice of osteopathy was formulated by Dr Andrew Taylor Still in The United States in the mid 1800’s. The medical profession at the time was unsophisticated to the point of being dangerous. Still undertook the task of looking for health within the individual, and encouraging the human self healing mechanism. He worked largely with and through the musculoskeletal system and recognised the importance of the vascular system. Still’s techniques and philosophy have been taught and developed in osteopathic institutions since that time around the world. Osteopaths are highly trained specialists who can diagnose and treat many conditions from back pain joint conditions to headaches and digestive problems. Treatment is taylor made to the individual, with a focus on the cause of the problem rather than just the symptom. This method of analysis and treatment can allow the patient to indentify triggers which will compromise their health. Osteopathic treatment may be gentle to firm if necessary, working directly on muscles and bone with various advanced massage techniques, joint mobilisation and manipulation. Better spinal mobility can improve nerve and blood supply to all the major organs and stimulate their function, resulting in increased overall vitality and good health. When our bodies are balanced and efficient they will work with the minimum of wear and tear leaving us more energy for living. Osteopathy is now one of two complimentary therapies that are legally regulated in the UK. Registered with The General osteopathic Council (GOSC)(link) The public can be assured that the osteopath is trained to a high standard required by the GOSC and in possession of a bachelor of science degree in osteopathic medicine. The requirements of registration also require the osteopath to undertake regular training to update their knowledge. Some of the conditions treated by osteoapths:
